I ran across an interesting article and would like to share with you my thought on this. If you like to read this article, please click on this link. There are individuals who call themselves as cult experts who spend a lot of energy and time in labeling World Mission Society Church of God as a cult. One of the things they say against the church is that members of the church are love bombing new people into joining the church. What does love bombing mean? Not everyone who has visited church might agree with the church’s teachings but they cannot deny this one thing – members in the church are very kind and nice. The cult experts say that members are using a psychological technique called ‘love bombing’ which means being nice to new recruits to get them to join the cult. This was my reaction after reading this.
It is quite offensive that members’ sincere and genuine love is taken as some sort of psychological technique.
Did Jesus teach love bombing?
Matt 22:36-40 “Teacher, which is the greatest commandment in the law?” Jesus replied: “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’ This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments.”
Matt 5:44 But I tell you: Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you
I don’t think anybody emphasized the love more than Jesus Christ. Jesus taught us to love God with all our hearts and minds and love our neighbors as ourselves. Also He taught that we should love even our enemies. What about His disciples? Apostle Paul who is considered one of the best apostles also stressed the importance of love.
1 Cor 13:13 And now these three remain: faith, hope and love. But the greatest of these is love.
Romans 13:8-10 Let no debt remain outstanding, except the continuing debt to love one another, for he who loves his fellowman has fulfilled the law…Love does no harm to its neighbor. Therefore love is the fulfillment of the law.
Both 1 Corinthians and Romans were written by Paul and love is clearly emphasized in these books. Then can we say Jesus and Apostle Paul were teaching the psychological technique of love bombing? Since the core teaching of the Bible is love, the Bible is a book that is full of psychological techniques that manipulate people’s minds according to the logic of cult experts.
Members in the Church of God are nice because they want to practice the teaching of the Bible
The reason by the members in WMS Church of God are nice to people is because the Bible teaches them to do so.
Titus 1:8 Rather, he must be hospitable, one who loves what is good, who is self-controlled, upright, holy and disciplined.
1 Cor 13:4-5 Love is patient, love is kind…It does not dishonor others…
Welcoming new people and being kind to them is clearly a teaching of the Bible and this is the motivation for members to be nice people. The Bible also teaches that God loves us first and therefore we should love our brothers and sisters. If this is called love bombing, cult experts are not just offending church of God members but also the entire Christianity.
If you love someone, you might focus on good things that person has. If you hate someone, even the good things he/she has might not look good. This is the same with the cult experts who try to do anything to label the church as a cult. Let me finish this post with one more verse.
Titus 1:15 (NLT) Everything is pure to those whose hearts are pure. But nothing is pure to those who are corrupt and unbelieving, because their minds and consciences are corrupted.
