Is God the Mother in the Bible?

One of the popular topics we cover in the World Mission Society Church of God (WMSCOG) is the existence of God the Mother. Most Christians have known God only as Father not as Mother. I asked many people why God is referred as Father, and many gave a similar answer. “God was called Father because it was a patriarchal society back then.” Could this be a sufficient answer? In old times, most of countries had the patriarchal societies but there were still concepts of female deity. Ancient Greece was a highly patriarchal society but people believed in a lot of goddesses. Ancient Egypt was also a very patriarchal society but still believed in many female deity. However, in Christianity, the concept of female God has not even been considered. Some might say it is because the Bible does not talk about God the Mother. Is it so?

The Bible testifies about God the Mother from the very beginning

Contrary to a popular belief that God is only Father, we can find a lot of references to God the Mother in the Bible. Let’s take a look at the book of Genesis, the first book of the Bible.

Gen 1:26 Then God said, “Let us make mankind in our image, in our likeness, so that they may rule over the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky, over the livestock and all the wild animals, and over all the creatures that move along the ground.”

Here, we can see God said, “Let us make mankind in our image, in our likeness.” How did He speak? He clearly spoke in plural. This means that God is not one but more than one. In Hebrew text, the word for God in this context is Elohim which means Gods.

Then how many Gods exist? Let’s see the next verse.

Gen 1:27 So God created mankind in his own image, in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them.

Human beings were created according to the image of God. Here, how many images do you see? Apparently two: male and female. Therefore, there should be two images of God — the male image of God and the female image of God. We always have called the male image of God Father. This is also a teaching of the Bible.

Matt 6:9 “This, then, is how you should pray: “ ‘Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name,

Since Christ taught us God is our Father, God is clearly our spiritual Father who is the male image of God. Then how should we call the female image of God? Of course Mother.

The Bible testifies about God the Mother, even until the last page

Rev 22:17 The Spirit and the bride say, “Come!” And let the one who hears say, “Come!” Let the one who is thirsty come; and let the one who wishes take the free gift of the water of life.

The Bible writes that the Spirit and the bride will give us the water of life. What is the water of life? It is eternal life according to Christ (John 4:13-14). The only one who can give us eternal life is God. This means that the Spirit and the bride must be God. Hm…then who are the Spirit and the Bride? The Spirit means the Holy Spirit who is God the Father according to the Trinity. In case you are not familiar with the term Trinity, it means God the Father, God the Son and God the Holy Spirit are the same one God. Therefore, it is no surprise that the Spirit gives us eternal life. Yet, the Bible testifies that the bride also gives us eternal life. Then, who is this bride? Some may say that the bride represents a church or God’s people. However, can a church or God’s people give eternal life? Absolutely not. Therefore, the bride in Revelation cannot be a church or God’s people. If you want to know more about this, you can read this article.

Then who is the bride?

Rev 21:9-10 One of the seven angels who had the seven bowls full of the seven last plagues came and said to me, “Come, I will show you the bride, the wife of the Lamb.” And he carried me away in the Spirit to a mountain great and high, and showed me the Holy City, Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God.

Here, an angel told John that he would show a bride who is the wife of the Lamb and showed the Holy City Jerusalem coming down out of heaven from God. This means the bride is heavenly Jerusalem. Some might be confused thinking that how a city could be a bride. However, many things in the Bible are written figuratively. For example, the Lamb here is not a literal lamb but represents Jesus Christ. Keeping this in mind, we should correctly understand whom the bride represents in the Bible. We can find the answer in the book of Galatians.

Gal 4:26 But the Jerusalem that is above is free, and she is our mother.

Here, we can understand that the heavenly Jerusalem represents our Mother. Therefore, the bride in Revelation is our heavenly Mother.

Conclusion: God the Mother is in the Bible

Besides these verses, there are many more verses that testify about Mother. Then some might wonder why not many people talk about Her much if She is really in the Bible. Well…2000 years ago, not many people knew and understood about Jesus Christ even though He was testified in the Bible (Isa 9:6-7, Mic 5:2, Isa 7:14). Yet, after many years, more and more people began to recognize Him and now it is hard to find someone who does not know Jesus. There was a lot of hindrance to spreading the good news of Christ (Acts 4:1-11) but the truth always prevailed and became known to God’s people. It will be the same for the truth of Mother. Though many try to deny Her existence in the Bible, eventually all the people in the world will know about Her. With this belief the World Mission Society Church of God is taking the lead in testifying about the God the Mother.
