One of the claims that slanderers makes is that the Church of God encourages abortions. Even though this is just a beginning of the article, let me tell you this. That is absolutely not true! I have personally attended the church of God for 10 years and have seen many members who started the family. They are still happy about their decision and also are very active in church. Some couples choose not to have the children because of their lifestyle or personal preferences, but do they not have children because of a church’s teaching? That is not true. I highly encourage you to watch this video which can also be found in the original post from www.thetruewmscog.org.

This is one of the most popular claims made against the Church of God. I guess it’s because money is always a sensitive topic to everyone. Those who slander the church often ask people, “Is it true that your church teaches you o give 1/10 of your income?” If you just hear this question, you can naturally have the impression that the church tries to take people’s money.
It is true that the Church of God is practicing the law of tithe. However, there are a few things that I want to point out regarding this matter.
- The Church of God is practicing the law of tithe because it is a teaching from the Bible.
God told us that the tithe belongs to God and therefore, not practicing tithe is robbing God. Yet, He promised abundant blessing to those who practice it.
Malachi 3:8-10 – “Will a man rob God? Yet you rob me. “But you ask, ‘How do we rob you?’ “In tithes and offerings…Bring the whole tithe into the storehouse, that there may be food in my house. Test me in this, “ says the LORD Almighty,” and see if I will not throw open the floodgates of heaven and pour out so much blessing that you will not have room enough for it.
Even in the New Testament, Christ never said the law of tithe was abolished. Rather he emphasized the law of tithe in many verses of the Bible.
Matthew 23:23 – “Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You give a tenth of your spices – mint, dill and cumin. But you have neglected the more important matters of the law – justice, mercy and faithfulness. You should have practiced the latter, without neglecting the former.
Therefore, the law of tithe is an important teaching that every Christian should follow.
- Church of God does not force anybody to tithe and give offerings.
Practicing the teachings of the Bible is totally up to the members who learn the Bible. For example, teachers in the Church of God can teach the Sabbath day to newcomers but actually keeping the Sabbath day is their choice. It is the same for the law of tithe. Because it is the teaching from the Bible, how can we not teach it to people? I heard some churches do not teach the law of tithe because they do not want to burden people but the true church should always deliver God’s teaching whether people like it or not. However, practicing this law is totally up to members’ decision. The church never forces anyone to practice the law of tithe against his or her will.
- Satan always distorts the word of God
“Is it true that your church teaches you to give 1/10 of your income?” How do you feel when you hear this question? Though the law of tithe is clearly the teaching of the Bible, this question makes people feel that something fishy is going on. We can find the similar questions in the Bible. In the garden of Eden, God commanded Adam and Eve not to eat from the tree of knowledge of good and evil. At that time, what did serpent say?
Gen 3:1 …”Did God really say, ‘You must not eat from any tree in the garden’?”
Satan asks a question that contains a half truth to plant a doubt in people’s hearts. When Eve was asked that question, he came to doubt the word of God and fell into the temptation of Satan. We have to realize Satan is using the same tactic nowadays as well. They ask the question in a wrong way and in a wrong context to confuse people and distort the true meaning behind the tithe.
The Church of God practices the tithe because it is a teaching of the Bible. However, practicing the law of God is members’ freedom. The church cannot force people to practice the law of tithe. If members understand the will of God through studies, they voluntarily practice this teaching. Regarding the accusation about the church of God being a money hungry cult, as the article mentioned, where is the evidence? If the Church of God really has that problem, IRS would have caught this long time ago. Please do not listen to their baseless claims and if you have any question about this, please visit the nearest church of God to your location.
