Have you ever wondered what happens after death? Because life is busy, you might not think about this very often but I am sure you pondered upon it at least a few times. This question eventually leads to a question about the human soul. Does the human soul exist? If it does, where did it come from? Though these questions seem unanswerable, we can find the clear answers in the Bible.
The soul comes from God
According to the creation story of the Bible, the human being has both the body and soul.
Gen 2:7 Then the Lord God formed a man from the dust of the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living being.
The Bible testifies that living beings were made with two elements— dust of the ground and the breath of life. Obviously we were not literally made of dust and breath so these two should represent something. Dust represent the visible and tangible part of us which is the body. Breath of life represents the invisible and intangible part of us which is the soul. When these two elements are together, a man becomes a living being. Then, what happens when these two are separated? Then a man is no longer a living being, which means he is dead. Therefore, death in the Bible means the separation of the body and soul.
Ecc 12:7 and the dust returns to the ground it came from, and the spirit returns to God who gave it.
This verse describes what happens when a man dies. Here, the body which is represented as the dust returns to the ground while the spirit returns to God. In other words, even though the body perishes, the human soul lives on and returns to God’s spiritual world. Prophet Job recorded this teaching in the Bible.
Job 19:26 (ASV) And after my skin, even this body, is destroyed, Then without my flesh shall I see God;
Job wrote that he could see God after his body got destroyed. Then, what part of him can see God after his body is destroyed? Apparently his soul! If his soul gets destroyed with his body, how can he see God? Therefore, the human soul definitely exists and lives on even after physical death.
Let’s see one more example.
1 Kings 17:21-22 (NKJV) And he stretched himself out on the child three times, and cried out to the Lord and said, “O Lord my God, I pray, let this child’s soul come back to him.” Then the Lord heard the voice of Elijah; and the soul of the child came back to him, and he revived.
A widow’s son was dead but when Elijah prayed to God, the boy’s soul came back and he revived. Just as we have learned so far, when the soul is with the body, a man lives and when the soul departs from the body, a man dies. Also after physical death, the human soul still exists. Then what can we learn from the existence of the soul?
Existence of the soul is the proof that spiritual parents exist
We all know where our bodies came from. They came from our parents- more specifically our fathers and mothers. Then, what about our souls? Did our souls come from physical parents as well? No. According to the Bible, we have spiritual parents as well as physical parents.
Heb 12:9 Moreover, we have all had human fathers who disciplined us and we respected them for it. How much more should we submit to the Father of spirits and live!
The Bible teaches us that not only the human fathers but also the Father of spirits exist. I am sure all of us know who the Father of spirits is- Of course God Almighty. However, can a father alone have children? That is impossible. God could have made that way but he did not. In the creation story, God created Adam first but later created Eve as his suitable helper in giving life. That is why the name “Eve” means life. Through this, God made it clear that it is His providence to have children through both male and female. If it takes both father and mother to give physical life, what about the spiritual life? It should come from both spiritual Father and Mother. As none of us could have been born without our mothers, our souls could not have existed without spiritual Mother. The Bible clearly testifies about the spiritual Mother in the book of Galatians.
Gal 4:26 But the Jerusalem that is above is free, and she is our mother.
Though we all have different physical mothers, we have the same spiritual Mother who gave birth to our souls. That is why she is called “our” Mother. For this reason, the World Mission Society Church of God believes in God the Mother as well as God the Father. It will come very clear to you why knowing and believing in Her is so important.
